TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior forward JT Shumate of the Toledo men’s basketball team was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office today. Shumate is being honored for the second time this season and currently holds a 3.844 grade-point average as a middle childhood education major.
A Newark, Ohio native who was a CSC First-Team Academic All-American last year, Shumate averaged a team-high 19.0 points to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in two games last week. He also shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the field, 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point range and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.
After scoring 15 points vs. Ball State, Shumate tallied a team-high 23 points and connected on a season-high four three-point field goals in a 102-74 win over Western Michigan.
Toledo (10-6, 1-2 MAC) will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a trip to DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois (5-11, 1-2 MAC).
