Toledo Announces 2023 Schedule

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team announced its 2023 schedule on Thursday.

The Rockets’ 56-game slate features 26 non-conference contests and 30 Mid-American Conference games. Highlights include games against three teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season (Central Michigan, Michigan, and Wright State) and another that finished in the Top 70 in RPI (Middle Tennessee), as well as a midweek contest at Ohio State.

For the third year in a row, Toledo and Bowling Green will face off at Fifth Third Field. The Battle of I-75 presented by Cooper Tires will head Downtown Toledo on Friday, May 19. More information regarding that game will be available in the coming weeks.

After playing four-game conference series each of the last two seasons, the MAC is returning to its traditional three-game weekend series format for 2023. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the MAC Tournament, which will be held from May 24-27 at the site of the regular season champion.

“Every year we strive to play a very competitive schedule, and the 2023 season is no different,” head coach Rob Reinstetle said. “I’m really excited about the opportunities we have to go on the road and compete against quality programs.  In conference play, we’ll return to more of a standard college baseball format. This will be a refreshing change compared to the four-game MAC weekend series we’ve been playing the last couple seasons. Accompanying the change to MAC play brings back the midweek games that we haven’t been able to play the past couple years. That’s exciting because it gives us a chance to play some of the best teams in our general region. All of these early-season games and mid-week contests will help us prepare for the very competitive MAC schedule. We have a very talented team that I feel will be competing for a MAC Championship.  I hope that the fans will come out to Scott Park and check out our exciting brand of baseball.”

Toledo will open its season with 11-straight non-conference games, beginning with a three-game series at East Tennessee State (Feb. 17-19). The Rockets will also play in the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic hosted by USC Upstate (Feb. 24-26), playing the hosts as well as Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb. They’ll follow that up with a three-game series at Middle Tennessee (March 3-5) and a two-game series at UT-Martin (March 7-8) during spring break before beginning conference play.

Toledo’s home conference series include Akron (March 24-26), Ohio (April 7-9), Western Michigan (April 28-30), Central Michigan (May 12-14), and Bowling Green (May 18-20). UT’s road MAC schedule includes trips to Miami (March 10-12), Ball State (March 17-19) Kent State (April 1-3), Eastern Michigan (April 21-23), and Northern Illinois (May 5-7).

The Rockets will regularly play mid-week games for the first time since 2019 and have 12 on their schedule. Home mid-week games are scheduled against Youngstown State (March 28), Dayton (April 5), Wright State (April 12), Bowling Green (April 26), and Purdue Fort Wayne (May 16). Road mid-week tilts are scheduled at Wright State (March 14), Ohio State (March 22), Purdue Fort Wayne (April 4), Youngstown State (April 11), Michigan (April 19), Dayton (April 25), and Oakland (May 9).

Toledo’s home field, Scott Park, underwent major renovations during the offseason to install an artificial turf infield. The new playing surface will be a welcome addition in 2023 and will provide several benefits for the Rockets this season and beyond.

“Having turf will allow us to play in the different weather conditions we typically get up here in Toledo,” Reinstetle said. “This is such an awesome addition to the program, because it will give us more time on an actual baseball field, which only helps further our players’ development.”

Toledo is coming off a 33-win season in 2022 and its first MAC Tournament appearance since 2018.
