TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team opened its weekend series vs. Bowling Green on Thursday, falling to the Falcons 4-0 at Scott Park.
The Rockets were unable to get much going offensively against BGSU pitching, tallying just two hits in the series opener. A pair of solo home runs gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead, and they added runs in the fifth and ninth innings to bring about the 4-0 final score.
Junior Jeron Williams and sophomore Caden Konczak each recorded hits for Toledo. Junior Jack Walker made the start on the mound, and senior Cal McAninch and freshman Nathan Leininger finished the game out of the bullpen.
McAninch struck out three across 2.2 shutout innings and extended his scoreless innings pitched streak to 22.0 frames. He has not allowed a run in eight straight outings.
Friday’s game will take place at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased through the Toledo Mud Hens Ticket Office by visiting utrockets.com/FifthThirdField.
How it Happened
- BGSU’s Tyler Ross opened the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the second to put his team ahead, 1-0.
- The biggest Toledo offensive threat came in the bottom of the third inning. Scott Mackiewicz walked and Jeron Williams singled to put runners at first and second with one out. Bowling Green’s starting pitcher DJ Newman retired the next two batters, however, to end the inning.
- Two innings later, Nathan Archer put the Falcons ahead 2-0 with a leadoff home run.
- The Rockets’ deficit grew to 3-0 in the top of the fifth on a BGSU RBI triple. Cal McAninch ended the Falcons’ threat, however, by inducing two quick outs to get out of the inning.
- Adam Fallon’s leadoff homer in the top of the ninth extended Bowling Green’s lead to 4-0.
- Garret Pike reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to put a runner on base for the Rockets, but nothing came of the situation and the game ended with a final score of 4-0.
