TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz is declaring victory in the Toledo mayoral race.
“To be reelected now, not once but twice, is humbling,” Kapszukiewicz said Tuesday night. “I take very seriously the trust that the voters have placed in me.”
Election results posted on the Lucas County Board of Elections as of 9:15 p.m. have him listed with more than 60% of the vote, but there are still outstanding precincts left to report their results. Challenger Roberto Torres has about just under 30% of the vote, and just under 10% of the vote is listed as write-in.
“It was a different campaign. My opponents were earnest. They have a love of Toledo. But they were newer candidates. Neither of them had really run before. Their campaigns were kind of hit and miss a little bit,” Kapszukiewicz said. “I didn’t feel like this was the strongest campaign I’ve ever had to face, which made it a little different. I was able to focus on the job of being mayor much more than campaigning. I really didn’t do very much campaigning. I think that was good for the city because I was able to continue focusing on the job as mayor.”
A win for Kapszukiewicz would mark history for the City of Toledo. He’d be the first mayor to serve three consecutive terms, made possible after voters approved a charter amendment last November to allow mayors to serve up to three consecutive terms in office.
“I understand the history of what’s happened here tonight,” the mayor said. “That comes with added responsibility to meet that moment and to show the voters that I was up to the trust they placed in me. That’s a big deal to me. I’m going to carry that with me through these final four years.”
