Taxpayers race to meet April 15 tax deadline

April 15 is Tax Day. Here’s what you need to know.

TOLEDO, Ohio — With the clock ticking toward the 11:59 p.m. deadline on April 15, taxpayers across the country are making a final push to file their federal income tax returns—or at least request an extension. Tax experts urge last-minute filers to double-check key details to avoid common errors that could delay refunds or result in penalties.

Tuesday marks the official deadline to file federal income taxes, and tax preparers like Nancy White are working around the clock to help clients finish in time.

White, who has been preparing taxes for 44 years, said the final day of the season still brings her excitement.

“I love it,” White said. “I’ve been doing this for 44 years, so I love the last day—it’s exciting.”

Phones have been ringing nonstop at her Toledo office, with clients seeking help to navigate the filing process. White said one of the most important things taxpayers can do is verify their personal information before submitting their returns.

Common mistakes include incorrect Social Security numbers, misspelled names, incorrect filing statuses, and entering the wrong account or routing numbers for direct deposit refunds.

“They may forget about that and leave it off their return—and that won’t be a good thing,” White said.

Some Toledo residents have already filed their taxes and are planning how to use their refunds.

“I’m going to use that return and invest it in a trip to Canada to watch the swans and see plays for a whole week,” said Dr. Paulette D. Kilmer.

Others are feeling the pressure as the deadline looms.

“Tax Day can be very scary, and I did not file yet,” said Amber Wilson. “So today is the deadline, and I’m a little nervous, but I’m going to get some help and hopefully be able to file by the end of today.”

For those who can’t file on time, White recommends submitting IRS Form 4868 to request an automatic six-month extension.

“They need to file an extension and take care of the error right after the deadline,” she said.

It’s important to note that while an extension gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file their return, it does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed. Payments are still due by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.
