Several galleries in Toledo Museum of Art to close for reinstallation until 2027

TOLEDO, Ohio — Several Toledo Museum of Art galleries will close later this year during a reinstallation process that’s expected to last more than a year. 

According to a press release from the art museum, several galleries in the West Wing of the Green Building will close starting Dec. 15. The affected galleries are as follows:

• The Great Gallery
• Galleries 22-27: Dutch, French Baroque and Rococo paintings and sculptures
• Galleries 32-33: European art
• Gallery 34: Jewelry collection

The art museum said the closures will last until 2027, when the entire reinstallation process is expected to conclude. The upcoming reinstallation will provide a chronological journey through art history, according to a press release from TMA last year, adding that it aims to tell a more accurate and inclusive history.

Artworks normally displayed in the aforementioned galleries will be placed into storage during the reinstallation project, the museum said. It mentioned popular works including The Architect’s Dream, Blind Man’s Buff and The Crowning of Saint Catherine by name.

 Meanwhile, the following galleries and areas will remain open:

• The Glass Pavilion
• Classic Court, Wolfe Gallery and Galleries 1, 4, 6, 7, 15, 16, 18, 19, 35
• TMA Cafe, TMA Store and Library
• Family Center and Education Wing
• All entrances, elevators and restrooms
• Daily glassblowing demonstrations

As for the reinstallation, TMA said it’s the first of its kind in the last 40 years of the museum’s history. Galleries will be arranged chronologically and include more areas to “sit, linger and look while exploring art.” Better lighting will also be installed, and a new temporary exhibition space will be constructed.
