TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Some of our veterans received a little extra help on Veterans Day. A reminder that even our heroes need support with basic food needs.
Toledo’s Seagate Food Bank has a food pantry designated for veterans. Honoring their service each week and especially on Veterans Day.
The design of the veterans marketplace at the Seagate Food Bank makes it feel like someone is shopping for groceries.
“It’s like shopping at Kroger’s,” said veteran Jordan Joseph.
For veterans like Joseph, there is no charge at the end. This is one of the twice-weekly veterans’ food pantries.
“It helps out the veterans. A lot of times, I’ll give stuff to people that are lying around, the homeless veterans and help them out,” said veteran Mario Guerrero.
Guerrero tries to pay it forward as he and other vets get basics like meats, fruit, veggies and bread products. Even some sweet treats.
“They’re coming in, they just look at what they’re getting and the look on their face is amazing. It’s the best thing to see,” said Delores Reyes of the Toledo Seagate Food Bank.
To get the food, a veteran needs to register through the Lucas County Veterans Service Commission. Take the proper paperwork there at the designated time and veterans are leaving with so many supplies. Plus, they leave something for the staff and volunteers here.
“To hear that is really something special. You realize, wow, this is amazing what they really did for us,” said Reyes.
“It means the world to me that somebody cares,” said veteran Jesse Lerma. “It’s a blessing. It’s a blessing.”
These veterans are so appreciative of the help. They’re honored on Veterans Day each year, but on this Veterans Day, they’re getting a hand up as well.
“‘Cause everybody needs help sometimes. Nowadays, things are kinda hard,” said Joseph.
