TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Demanding answers from the organization put in place to protect children. On Monday, protesters gathered to honor the life of Kei’Mani Latigue, the 13-year-old who was found murdered inside an abandoned house in Toledo.
The protesters were also pressing for more accountability from Lucas County Children Services (LCCS).
The protest began at 1 p.m. and lasted almost three hours. People gathered outside of LCCS to express their concerns with LCCS and they were making sure their voices were heard.
“They need to be held accountable, they need to be looking into cases like it is their own family,” protester Lena Roosevelt said.
Roosevelt was one of the many protesters who were in front of the building Monday.
The protesters want to make sure people are doing their part in trying to prevent a situation like Kei’Mani’s from ever happening again.
“All we can do is come together and try to save the next child. If we can just keep that going and help the next one before it is too late, like it was with her,” Roosevelt said.
Before the protest, a group gathered for a community prayer at Spring Elementary, Kei’Mani’s school, in her honor. They then traveled to LCCS to protest.
The group grew in size as the hours went on, with people chanting, holding signs and cars passing by and honking in support.
Roosevelt describes the Toledo community as family and believes this protest will bring some positive change.
“When it comes to our own, we come together and to see everybody come together was so beautiful. Our voice will be heard and we want justice for her and any other child,” Roosevelt said.
Roosevelt said she wants people to continue the conversation about how they can help kids and that they are the future.
“Talk to your kids, talk to your children, teachers, be proactive and follow up. Something needs to be done,” Roosevelt said.
More protesters continued to gather in front of LCCS as the hours went on, all hoping for positive change in the near future.
