MLK Kitchen for the Poor receives a Helping Hand

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A local family has been making an impact on the Toledo area for more than 50 years. Giving struggling families a place to turn when their cabinets and refrigerators are empty.

For five decades, the Savage family has been feeding the hungry in Toledo and now, the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor is getting a helping hand from the Yark Automotive Group and 13 Action News.

Since 1969, the Savage family has been feeding the hungry in Toledo. Henry Savage Jr., the executive director of the MLK Kitchen for the Poor, said serving people is part of his family’s legacy. A legacy passed down through generations.

“The poor you’re going to have with you always. So, we’re going to always have to be looking out for a certain amount of people,” Henry Savage Jr. said.

When 13 Action News spoke with Henry Savage Jr. last year, he was actively working to train the next generation to take over the family mission.

“My dad used to tell us all the time, ‘Somebody ought to know that you were here,’ and what he meant was that we should be doing enough that the community knows that we’re here and we’re here to help,” Henry Savage Jr. said. “I consider it wonderful that we’ve been able to do that.”

The MLK Kitchen for the Poor has endured many storms through the years. This year in particular, not knowing if funding sources will stay in place.

“Where we’re at right now, we have a lot more people coming in and the impact of groceries going up and if you’ve done any shopping, you know what I’m talking about. You can’t afford the meats and things of that nature,” Henry Savage Jr. said.

That is why the Yark Automotive Group and 13 Action News are presenting the Savage family with a check for $1,300.
