TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – During election season, members of a local group turn their cars into vehicles for democracy, offering free rides to the polls.
“Jobs with Justice, we’re dedicated, we’re nonpartisan, we don’t ask who you’re voting for, we don’t care who you’re voting for, we want you to vote at the end of the day,” Bob Lynn, the secretary for Toledo Area Jobs with Justice, said.
Lynn drove Toledo voter Cheryl Bennett to the Lucas County Board of Elections to drop off her absentee ballot at the drop-box on Monday.
Bennett says she is a regular voter.
“All my life,” Bennett said. “Ever since I was 18, I’ve been voting.”
She’s been happy with the Rides to the Polls and has been recommending it to people she knows.
“Very good service so you can exercise your power to vote,” Bennett said.
Any voter in Lucas County or Northern Wood County can request a free ride on Election Day by calling (419) VOTE-NOW, or (419) 868-3669.
“Our number made it into the Google,” Lynn said, noting that even people outside of the Toledo area have contacted Jobs with Justice inquiring about rides to the polls.
The 419 area code did not matter, and it was a top result for voters across the country searching for rides.
“Last presidential election we got calls from 23 different states … looking for rides to the polls that’s how desperate this service is needed,” Lynn said.
He’s been encouraging other locations to jumpstart initiatives similar to Rides to the Polls. In the meantime, Lucas County and Northern Wood County voters can still reach out to Jobs with Justice.
“We’ll pick you up, we’ll take you to vote, we’ll wait while you vote and then we’ll take you back home,” Lynn said.
Bennett encouraged everyone to use their power of voting in local elections.
“You need to be concerned where you live and who we put in place to help us.”
