Helping Hands of St. Louis in need

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – In honor of holy week, the Helping Hands of St. Louis came together for an annual tradition, serving hundreds of people for Easter Dinner. But, with grocery prices as high as they are and cuts to food programs rocking shelters across the nation, the group is hoping for a blessing.

For this Easter Dinner, some classics are on the menu. Ham, sweet potatoes and something that only the people at Helping Hands of St. Louis can provide.

“There is always hope. So, we always try to give our guests hope when they come down here. Whether that is through a smile, kind words or food,” Sue Shrewsberry, the director of Helping Hands of St. Louis, said.

Shrewsberry said there is a hunger for that hope all around her.

“The need is so much more than what we are getting in,” Shrewsberry said.

As grocery prices stay high and their food donors took a cut in programs.

“I have not seen our cupboards this bare in a long time,” Shrewsberry said.

Demand continues to outpace supply.

“It just seems like as soon as we fill them up, they’re depleted again. The need is so much more than what we are getting in,” Shrewsberry said.

On days like this, serving about 300 people in need, that hunger builds. But, like all good chefs, if you make enough of something, whether it is on the menu or not, it always tastes better when you share.

As bellies are filled, smiles are served and a difference is made.

Shrewsberry can taste that hope she yearns for.

“We have went through some lean times before,” Shrewsberry said. “But, there is always someone who shows up. We will talk about what is needed and two days later, it shows up.”
