The latest movie may bring back the familiar faces of Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser.
LOS ANGELES — Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz may reprise their “The Mummy” roles in a fourth installment of the franchise, reports say.
While no details of the plot are available yet, Variety reports Radio Silence Productions, a company consisting of horror filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez and Chad Villella, is set to direct. Their work consists of 2019’s horror-comedy “Ready or Not” and for reviving the “Scream” franchise with a sixth installment in 2023.
The franchise consists of three movies: “The Mummy” from 1999, “The Mummy Returns” from 2001 and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” from 2008.
Universal Pictures has not publicly commented on the reports.
Fraser, who won an Academy Award for best actor for starring in “The Whale,” and Weisz, who most recently was in Marvel’s “Black Widow” would return as couple Rick and Evelyn O’Connell from the first two movies.
Both have previously expressed interest in returning to these roles, calling it charming and lots of fun.
Rumors of the fourth installment come eight years after Universal Pictures tried to revive the franchise with a movie by the same name in 2017, starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Jake Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe. The movie was seen as a box office failure, only grossing $410 million worldwide, according to Forbes.
The first film is described as a “suspenseful and horrifying epic” and focuses on treasure hunters from the 1920s who stumble across an ancient tomb and accidentally set a curse loose.
The trilogy grossed more than $460 million all together, according to Box Office Mojo. The first movie was rereleased in theaters in 2024 and grossed an additional $1.56 million.
“The Scorpion King,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is a spin-off prequel of “The Mummy” movies and in itself has four movies.
No additional details are yet known about the fourth installment, or when it may start filming.
