TOLEDO, Ohio — A mother and her two children are safe after a Wednesday morning housefire in central Toledo.

According to Toledo Fire and Rescue, crews were dispatched to the 500 block of Winfield Road near North Detroit Avenue around midnight. The woman, who lives on the building’s second floor, smelled fire and was able to evacuate herself and her two children from the duplex safely.

Toledo Fire and Rescue crews said the man who lives in the home’s lower half was not home when the fire started.

Both of the apartments in the duplex suffered heavy damage, and heavy smoke covered much of the area while the fire was being extinguished.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but an investigator was called to the scene to determine the cause. It’s unknown at this time if the Red Cross will be assisting the displaced family.
