DUNDEE, Michigan (WTVG) – Fake $100 bills are showing up at businesses in Dundee, MI. So far, police have discovered the imposters at four different locations in two days.
Subway, Hungry Howie’s, Jimmy John’s, and a carryout all reported receiving counterfeit cash. Most of the bills, police said, had the same serial number.
At least one suspect was caught on security camera. Footage from inside Hungry Howie’s shows a man passing off a bogus bill.
Once Dundee Police posted the video to Facebook, they found several other police agencies, including Saline and Shelby Twp, MI, were also looking for the same counterfeiters. Investigators are now saying they appear to be part of a larger ring.
“We found we had matching serial numbers and similar suspects,” said Officer Brian Biegajski of Dundee Police. “We have multiple suspects now at multiple agencies, and we are working together, comparing notes.”
So, how do you spot a fake? For starters, Officer Biegajski said the bills are an outdated design.
“They’re using 1988 prints. It’s an older $100 bill that doesn’t have the security markers. You don’t have the strip on the left and the hologram on the right. Also, they’re marking it with a marker to make it look like it has been checked prior, so the people are feeling confident that it’s a real bill and not checking it a second time,” explained Officer Beigajski, who added that the paper feels different than a normal $100 bill.
He said when in doubt, don’t accept the cash. After that, officers add, report it to police so they can track down whoever is passing off phony money as the real deal.
