Another college holding up registrations over Hope Toledo tuition balance

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Another group of students has been prevented from continuing their college education for now.

This was after the group was promised to have their tuition and housing paid. The I-TEAM found more issues for students in the Hope Toledo program. Another school is preventing the students from registering in the fall.

It’s not just students who are stuck at Lourdes University and are prevented from registering. Now it’s another school for a group of Scott High School graduates who were made a big promise.

You know Mercy College in downtown Toledo for healthcare. It’s a field always in demand. Three fewer students may enter the workforce because right now they cannot register for the fall.

They’re Scott graduates who in 2020 were told their tuition, room and board would be paid by a group started by Pete Kadens, an Ottawa Hills native who was starting Hope Toledo and making that college promise.

Fast forward to 2025, where a Mercy College spokeswoman said Hope Toledo owes the school $11,000 and those three Hope students are not allowed to re-register.

Same for several students at Lourdes University. Hope’s president and CEO, John Jones, told the I-TEAM Monday the bill was paid at Lourdes.

Lourdes said this Tuesday: “In the last couple of days, the university has been in contact with officials from Hope Toledo and we are optimistic that a solution will be in place shortly for our hope scholars.”

The University of Toledo is owed more than $150,000, according to the school. However, we’re told that’s not affecting the 18 Hope students there from registering for the fall.

Bowling Green State University is another partner institution where four students are enrolled. When asked about a balance there, a spokeswoman says: “Timelines have varied, but we have always received payment.”

Hope Toledo also branched out into Pre-K and pushed the idea of universal Pre-K. The funding for that is drying up and Hope Toledo has tried to get on the November ballot to become levy-funded but so far that’s not happened.
